The Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEx) is a test that certifies the massage therapy course-takers after graduating in their respective school and meets all state required hours. Once the examination is passed, the student will automatically become a licensed massage therapist, able to practice therapeutic massage legally. The examination has a limit of 2 hours to complete and consist of 8 sections, which includes:
- Anatomy and Physiology
This section accounts 14% of the test. This focuses on digestive and circulatory functioning, endocrine, skeletal structure, and nervous system.
This section accounts 11% of the test. This focuses on muscle utility, muscle fiber function and location, attachment ligaments, and range of motion.
- Pathology, Contraindications, Areas of Caution, Special Populations
This section accounts 13% of the test. This focuses on discomfort, pain, or an impaired movement caused by aging, injuries, or other special population conditions.
- Benefits and Physiological Effects
This section accounts 17% of the test. This focuses on the massage method benefits and manipulation of soft tissue, as well as the methods that match the conditions.
- Client Assessment, Reassessment & Treatment Planning
This section accounts 17% of the test. This focuses on the measurement of the ability to understand what the test-taker reads, to determine the main ideas, and to make a reference.
- Overview of Massage and Bodywork Modalities / Culture / History
This section accounts 5% of the test. This focuses on the history and general overview of massage in the context variations.
- Ethics, Boundaries, Laws, Regulations
This section accounts 15% of the test. This focuses on the professional boundaries, ethical behavior, code of ethics violation, a scope of the practices, the practices in therapy, principles, and confidentiality.
- Guidelines for Professional Practice
This section accounts 10% of the test. This focuses on the adherence to the high standards of knowledge and ethical behavior of laws and regulations, which apply to the profession.
For those needing to take the MBLEx exam, you must receive at least a score of 630. As well, you will receive a numerical scale total score as the diagnostic data that indicates your performance in every area of the content. The score is reported on your diagnostic summary are given as a guideline for your professional development in the future.
